What shell replacement for windows explorer is the most customizable, graphically speaking?

I would like it if it was freeware/open source. I want to be able to make themes/skins for it, and I need it to not be overly complicated (having to configure everything via text or xml files and command lines). I could learn a few basics if the shell demands it though.

You see, I like to draw, a lot ( I will be studying illustration in the near future) and I need something that lets me make things pretty, organized and functional in my desktop, as I often find myself digging through files and folders ( In my own desktop!).
